Mental health problems among college students are on the rise, with 1 in 3 students experiencing anxiety and 1 in 5 students experiencing depression.Untreated mental health issues can lead to poor academic performance, dropouts, and even suicide. Despite the need for mental health resources, college students often face barriers to accessing care, including cost, stigma, and a shortage of providers.
How might we help ease mental health problems amongst people especially students?
With an interest in Artificial Intelligence (AIs) and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) we started secondary research centered around the instances where AIs and APIs can track moods with respect to mental health amongst students. We sought to assess the level of mental health problems amongst students to help find an engaging way to the alleviate those problems. Our research resulted in the following insights:
1• Value depends on engagement: In our part of the society, mental health issues are not widely discussed, making people especially students with these challenges having no one to confide in.
2• Scattered industry adoption: While an increasing amount of people are adopting the use of application driven interfaces and social media, the application of these interfaces are wide-ranging in only a mere handful of industries
We then began ideating, creating different concepts to work from. To narrow down to our concept that we would move forward with, we considered the following criteria:
Feasibility
We wanted to chose the concept that aligned the best with potential capabilities of the
platform.
Need
We wanted to make sure there was a need for this type of product that was currently not met
Snuggli uses an Application Programming Interface (API) to complete the task of enabling users to post uplifting messages to others, share ideas and interact on posts as well. The app also uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) to track a user's mood from when they log unto the platform. A request is sent to the API which takes care of users posts and interactions on the platform.
We developed a low fi prototype and went on to test with potential users. Through testing the prototype, we reached three insights to drive our final design direction.
01• User Animosity is paramount : As a requirement for forming trust,
users want to be able to freely vent without being discriminated in real life.
02• Worry Free : Users feel that the product takes some of the
pressure off because they are able to share ideas or engage a therapist without being judged or
misunderstood
03• Precision Matters : While automation can create ease, any
potential for error causes users to worry about accuracy.
